Cardiovascular Technologist Schools

Cardiovascular technologists help doctors diagnose and treat problems patients have with their heart and blood vessels. They usually work in hospitals, although they may work in off-site labs as well.

Cardiovascular Technologist Schools: What to Expect

Students typically spend their first year in cardiovascular technologist school studying career-focused information about the heart and blood vessels. After that, studies are focused on a niche area of cardiovascular technology chosen by the student. There are three specialty cardiovascular technology careers:

  • Invasive cardiology. Specialize in cardiac catheterization
  • Non-invasive technology. Focus on tests that don't require entering the body with any instruments. Echocardiographers (people who use ultrasounds to examine the heart) are an example
  • Vascular technology. Use non-invasive procedures related specifically to vascular issues to assess circulation

Cardiovascular technologist schools generally offer two-year associate's degree programs. However, four-year degrees are becoming increasingly common in this field.

A Career as A Cardiovascular Technologist

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual salary for cardiovascular technologist careers in 2009 was $48,300. Employment is this field is expected to grow 24 percent between 2008-2018. This high job growth should stem from an aging population with increased rates of heart disease as well as greater public awareness about heart health.
