Medical Insurance Coding Schools

Medical insurance coders are medical record technicians who specialize in coding health care records for billing purposes. In order for insurance companies to process claims and pay providers or reimburse patients, health care diagnoses and procedures must be classified according to a certain system. Medical insurance coders must master the various coding systems used by different health care facilities to ensure that payments are processed correctly.

Medical insurance coders work in comfortable office settings, such as physicians offices and typically have no hands-on patient care.

Medical Insurance Coding Schools

The training for medical insurance coders is similar to that which is required for other medical record technicians--generally, an associate's degree from an accredited medical insurance coding school. Course work for these programs includes:

  • Medical terminology
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Health care requirements and standards

Medical Insurance Coding Careers

Medical insurance coding specialists can seek certification from the American Academy of Professional Coders, the Board of Medical Specialty Coding, or the Professional Association of Health Care Coding Specialists. Some medical coders may get certified in specialty coding, which involves gaining in-depth knowledge in a specific area of medicine such as oncology.

Job opportunities should be good for medical coders--the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts job growth of 20 percent between 2008 and 2018, fueled in part by the increasing reliance on health care among Americans as well as a trend toward electronic health records. Medical records and health information technicians earned a median annual salary of $31,290 in 2009, the BLS reports.
