Help Americans Outsmart Dental Decay

Do you know the number one chronic disease affecting 5- to 17-year-old kids in America today? Well, according to the Centers for Disease Control, the answer to that question is, without doubt, tooth decay. In fact, more than one-fourth of children ages 2 to 4 have dental decay, and by ages 6 to 8, half of these children have cavities. But with proper prevention and the help of a good dentist or dental assistant, dental decay is largely avoidable.

Safeguard Smiles

Ask any dentist and they'll tell you that the first steps to a lifelong healthy mouth start before kids even have teeth. While children are very young, they experience a critical period whereby "good" oral bacteria compete with "bad" acid-producing ones to establish dominance in the mouth. If the bad bacteria win, your child might be more prone to dental decay for life.

Dentist Tips

According to many dentists today, you can help reduce bacteria by giving your infant's gums a gentle swipe with a damp cloth after each feeding. When teeth do finally erupt, brush them with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride-free toothpaste, twice a day. Finally, visit the dentist on a regular basis. You should make your baby's first dental appointment when his first tooth appears, and then schedule one every six months thereafter.

Becoming a Dentist

If you want to help our children outsmart dental decay with proper preventative measures, consider a challenging career as a dentist. Not only will you become part of the dental solution, fighting the number one disease afflicting children today, but you'll reap the rewards that come along with keeping a child's smile bright and beautiful for life.  Dental assistance courses are offered if you would like to get a feel for the profession before committing to pursuing a career in dentistry.
