Combating America's Obesity Crisis, One Health Degree at a Time

It's no secret that America is in the midst of an obesity crisis.  According to the American National Center for Health Statistics, the following statistics ring true when it comes to obesity in 2009:

  • From 1962 to 2000, the number of obese people increased from 13% to 31%.  In 2009, about 64% of Americans are overweight.
  • Childhood obesity has more than tripled
  • If current trends continue, about 1/3 of adults will be obese by the year 2020

Why are Americans Obese?

Well, this may seem like a question that's easy to answer:  we eat too much, right?  We don't move enough, right?  Well, yes.  But it is important to acknowledge that it's not only the amount of food that Americans are eating--it's the type of food.  With the ever-increasing popularity of fast-food and processed food, it's no wonder that Americans are packing on the pounds.  Instead of eating a piece of fresh fish, more often than not, we go for the double-cheeseburger, fries and a sugary soda.  With so many developments and discoveries regarding health and taking care of oneself, it is a tragedy that the obesity statistics still continue to rise.

Becoming a Part of the Solution to Obesity

Talking about how bad the problem is will not make it go away.  Most agree that the first step to making a change is educating oneself and others about a healthy lifestyle.  If good health, good nutrition and ample exercise is important to you, consider exploring a degree program in nutrition.  Not only will you learn about the latest health developments, you will also be able to make a living through doing something you are passionate about.  And last but certainly not least, you will be offering a helping hand to those who struggle with obesity.  The more educated our society becomes about preventative measures, as well as ways to combat current problems with obesity, the stronger future we have as a healthy nation.
