Nursing Re-Entry Fears

April 14th, 2010 by – Derek Brocklehurst

What advice do you have for re-entry nurses? I’ve been out of work for 10 years and am having trouble finding jobs in hospitals due to no experience.

My advice for re-entry nurses having been out of work for a while would be to apply to new grad training programs and explain your situation. Try to get involved with any local free clinics or community centers in order to refresh your nursing knowledge and skills and to start thinking in the mindset of a clinical nurse. Looking in to research nursing or home-health nursing might also be an easier transition than trying to jump back into the hospital setting. You might consider contacting your local community colleges that have accredited nursing programs, as they might have a refresher course or two for nurses who have been out of clinical practice and wish to start back up.
